All-In by Volkan Üce

At the start of the summer season, Ismail and Hakan are preparing for their new job at a gigantic, all-inclusive hotel on the Turkish Riviera. They observe the colourful swimsuits, the unfinished meals and the different ways of addressing other people, and gradually discover new opportunities to move ahead in life.

This is the premise of Volkan Üce’s second documentary feature, entitled All-In [+see also:

, which will be competing for CPH:DOX’s Next:Wave Award in April. The film explores the loss of innocence, set against the backdrop of a fading European dream. Initial kindness turns into indifference as Ismail and Hakan’s initiation into the absurd world of Western tourism soon leads them to ask: which dreams are really worth aspiring to?

The director, after gaining a Master’s degree in Political and Social Sciences at the University of Antwerp, started to work at the same institution and decided to continue as a self-taught filmmaker before completing his PhD. His first documentary feature, Displaced [+see also:

, had its world premiere at DOK Leipzig in 2017. On this project, Üce collaborated with DoP Joachim Philippe, sound engineer Gedeon Depauw, editor Els Voorspoels, composers David Boulter and Darius Timmer, and sound designer Mark Glynne.

All-In was produced by Emmy Oost and Magalie Dierick for Belgian outfit Cassette for Timescapes, and co-produced by Belgium’s VRT, Magellan Films and Onomatopee Films, the Netherlands’ Halal and BNNVARA, and France’s Little Big Story, in association with France Télévisions. It also received support from the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF), the Netherlands Film Fund, the CoBO Fund, the Belgian Development Cooperation, the Centre du Cinéma et de l’Audiovisuel de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, the European Union’s Creative Europe – MEDIA programme, the Pascal Decroos Fund, PROCIREP-ANGOA and the Belgian Tax Shelter. The Belgian distribution has been entrusted to Dalton Distribution, whilst Paris-based sales agent CAT&Docs holds the international sales rights.
