As the film industry was bemoaning the havoc that the COVID-19 pandemic was wreaking on the box office, in summer 2020 Santiago Segura released Father There Is Only One 2 [+see also:

. The box-office result of this release was immense (it grossed more than €10 million), especially during the industry’s most disastrous period of the last few decades, and many media dubbed the Madrilenian director the “saviour of Spanish cinema” (see the news). Now, it seems that the indefatigable producer and actor has just wrapped shooting (after six weeks of principal photography in Madrid, Toledo and the titular principality of Asturias) for his upcoming feature, ¡A todo tren! Destino Asturias, and thus, surely also in 2021, he will entice the general public to head to the dark rooms from 9 July onwards, following its release in theatres.

The film is, naturally, another family comedy, starring Segura himself alongside comedian Leo Harlem. They are flanked by Luna Fulgencio, Sirena Segura (the director’s daughter), Alan Miranda, Eneko Otore, Javier García, Verónica López, Diego García-Arrroba “El Cejas”, Florentino Fernández “Flo”, Joaquín Reyes and David Guapo.

With a screenplay written by the helmer together with his regular screenwriting partner, Marta González de Vega (Sin rodeos [+see also:

), the film tells the story of how a father is responsible for taking his son and some of his friends to a summer camp. However, when the train leaves without the dad but with the kids on board, on their own, the father and the grandfather will embark on a wild chase to catch up with the vehicle. Meanwhile, the incident will mark the start of a crazy trip for the kids, who will get themselves into the kind of mischief that they never dared indulge in when they were around grown-ups.

This is the first Spanish movie to employ special effects based around LED screens, as used in the series The Mandalorian. According to producer María Luisa Gutiérrez, of Bowfinger International Pictures, “In our productions, we always put our faith in new technologies focused on film (we made Torrente 4: Lethal Crisis [+see also:

in 3D, for instance). We like to experiment, innovate and introduce new technologies, despite how difficult it can sometimes be when you’re the first to implement them. This is exactly the case with this new film, where we have invested in virtual production, including, over the course of 15 shooting days, 516 LED screens with a total area of 129 m2, on which we are projecting the backgrounds of the trains. This huge investment has allowed us to reduce the financial cost of post-production and, above all, the amount of time it will take to finish the movie.”

¡A todo tren! Destino Asturias is a Bowfinger International Pictures and Atresmedia Cine production in conjunction with Buendía Estudios, Todos al tren la película AIE and The Glow, which boasted the collaboration of Atresmedia and Movistar Plus+. Warner Bros Pictures España will be in charge of distributing the movie in Spanish theatres.
