The story is as follows: once a luxurious home and now a creaking old mansion straight out of the pages of a ghost story, Villa Primic has been put up for sale. It was a painful decision, made by Signora Primic (Rose) and supported by Massimiliano and Adele who are the two heirs to the family’s dilapidated fortune. The only person not best pleased with the decision is family head Valerio, who soon realises he has never really got to know his nearest and dearest – and perhaps not even himself - and finally happens upon the bitter truth that living doesn’t equate to being alive.

Leading the cast are Massimiliano GalloMargherita Buy and Marina Confalone, who are further joined by young rising stars Antonia Fotaras (of the TV series Luna Nera [+see also:

“I’ve always believed that De Giovanni’s theatre work could be firmly anchored in a film context and that it offers great cinematic potential”, Gassmann insists. “In this film, we talk about family, inescapable change, and the passing of time, and we do so in the middle of the 1960s in Posillipo, Naples, through a family which must come to terms with living a life different to the comfortable one they’d thus far enjoyed. The Great Silence is a film full of light and dark, silences and explosive words, laughter, differing outlooks, anxieties; where everyone speaks but no-one really listens”.

In the words of the producers: “We’re proud of this film and happy to be able to bring a wonderful story to life on the big screen - one which has created such a buzz and known such success in the biggest Italian theatres over the years”.

The Great Silence is produced by Isabella Cocuzza and Arturo Paglia on behalf of Paco Cinematografica, in collaboration with Amazon Prime Video and in co-production with Polish firm Agresywna Banda. The film enjoys the backing of the Campania Region and the support of the Campania Region Film Commission. Distribution will be entrusted to Vision Distribution on a date which is yet to be confirmed.
