Ventana Sur goes hybrid for its 12th edition

The 12th edition of Ventana Sur is ready to begin on 30 November and will run until 4 December, both digitally and in physical locations in six different cities. The leading market for audiovisual content in Latin America is organised by Argentina’s National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA) and the Marché du Film - Festival de Cannes with the support of the Creative Europe Programme – MEDIA.

Most of the activities at Ventana Sur, including screenings, meetings, networking events and conferences, will be held online and more than 2,000 professionals, including at least 250 buyers and sellers, will be in attendance. More than 100 Latin American films along with 50 selected European productions will have their digital screenings and 70 of them will also be screened for buyers in cinemas in Mexico City, São Paulo, Bogota, Santiago de Chile, Madrid and Paris.

Ventana Sur also features a series of established programmes. In Animation!, a total of 16 Latin-American animation projects in development – out of 241 submissions – will be pitched in the event organised in partnership with the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market. Moreover, the producers from the region will meet representatives from important platforms, sales agents and studios from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Spain, the UK and Russia at the Ronda Internacional de Negocios. Moscow-based Animaccord Animation Studio and US cable network Adult Swim will also hold two conferences.

Focused on fantasy and horror, Blood Window will feature films having their market premieres and will be inviting 20 projects seeking partners to complete their financing. It will also showcase nine films in post-production curated by José Luis Rebordinos, director of the San Sebastián Film Festival. This will be topped by business talks, pitching sessions, and the Blood Window Lab, which has a record of 214 entries this year. In addition, Cinépolis, the largest theatre chain in Latin America, and Video Cine, will have their presentations on distribution and exhibition of genre films in the region.

Proyecta, the joint initiative between Ventana Sur and the San Sebastián Film Festival, will present 17 feature film projects aiming for co-production between Latin America and Europe, with three of them coming from Europe and two being selected by EAVE/Puentes and Brasil CineMundi. In Primer Corte, six films in post-production (out of 170 submitted) selected by the committee led by Eva Morsch Kihn, will compete for various awards, while at Copia Final, 6 recently finished and unreleased films will be screened as they were picked by the Ventana Sur programmers.

This year, two new initiatives are being introduced by Ventana Sur: Punto Genero, which aims to offer visibility and promote films produced by women and non-binary people in Latin America; and El Principio del Film, which promotes the role of screenwriters as essential figures in film production and will also present winning scripts in various contests held by public and private institutions in the region, in order to reach international markets.

Finally, two activities are dedicated to producers. Producers Network is the adapted version of the Marché du Film programme and up to 150 selected producers from the region will participate in a series of meetings to help them build their networks. Producers Bond is an informal networking event in a speed-meeting format that aims to bring together producers from Europe and Latin America for future collaborations.
