, the third season of which is now in pre-production, another work by the mysterious Italian writer loved the world over Elena Ferrante is set to be transposed to the small screen, this time via Netflix.  “Elena Ferrante’s books have inspired and captivated readers in Italy and elsewhere, and we’re very excited to be bringing her latest work to the small screens of our global audiences”, stated Felipe Tewes, Director of Local Language Original Series at Netflix, adding that they were “pleased to be continuing to invest in unique stories made in Italy which we believe will be enjoyed in Italy and all around the world”. “We’re very pleased to be able to continue sharing the world of Elena Ferrante with audiences”, was the remark of Fandango’s founder Domenico Procacci, who is also a producer on the TV series My Brilliant Friend. “The Lying Life of Adults narrates another part of that world; a part that’s close yet different”.

The Lying Life of Adults is a singular, powerful portrait of Giovanna’s transition from childhood to adolescence in the Nineties. Her search for a new identity after the happy one which characterised her childhood oscillates between two versions of Naples which share the same blood, but which fear and hate one another nonetheless: there’s surface-level Naples, with its mask of sophistication, and there’s what lies beneath, feigning excessiveness and vulgarity. Giovanna wavers between the former and the latter, climbing and falling, disoriented by the fact that, up or down, the city seems to hold no answers or offer no escape.

Elena Ferrante was included on Time Magazine’s prestigious “100 Most influential People of 2016” list and her novels have been translated into 45 languages. More than 15 million copies of the My Brilliant Friend saga have been sold, and the works were the inspiration behind the HBO-RAI series directed by Saverio Costanzo. The films L'amore molesto by Mario Martone and The Days of Abandonment by Roberto Faenza were also based upon her works.
