The Alhambra in Granada, the Plaza de España in Seville and the Monument to the Constitution of 1812 in Cadiz in the Spanish region of Andalusia, as presented by the Andalucía Film Commission, were all decorated with a prestigious Set of Culture Award in Cannes. Another two locations, this time presented by the Roma Lazio Film Commission, also emerged triumphant from the European locations competition, as sponsored by the European Year of Cultural Heritage: Subiaco with its Ponte San Francesco and Tivoli with its Villa Adriana.

Devised to promote European cultural and artistic heritage through the many locations represented by the individual Film Commissions, the award looks to recognise five different categories of sites believed to be emblematic of European culture – castles, bridges, town squares, archaeological sites and European sites of historic importance – on which European citizens are invited to vote via the Cineuropa website. Forty-five locations in European countries including France, Germany, Poland, Spain and Italy all reached the final stages of the competition. But ultimately, the Lazio region was recognised in the two categories of bridges and archaeological sites, while Andalusia bagged the prize in the remaining domains.

Organised in cooperation with the EUFCN European Film Commission Network, Cineuropa and the IFC - Italian Film Commissions, the awards ceremony was held on 22 May in the Italian Pavilion situated within Cannes’ Hotel Majestic. The Director of the Andalucía Film Commission, Piluca Querol, pointed out that the prizes would help draw attention to Andalucía Destino de Cine, a website created by the Film Commission, alongside the Andalusian Ministry for Tourism, Regeneration, Justice and Local Administration, to promote film tourism in the region. Meanwhile, the Director General of the Roma Lazio Film Commission, Cristina Priarone, remarked that “the Film Commission has always led the way when it comes to promoting the national landscape, with our innovative ideas, our international partnerships and our participation in the Set of Culture Award, which is yet another opportunity to catapult the various locations which fall within our region onto the international stage”.
