The ninth edition of When East Meets West (WEMW) has completed its line-up for this edition. Taking place from 20-22 January as an integral part of the 30th Trieste Film Festival (18-25 January), the Italian co-production forum, which this year is focusing on Benelux and the Central Eastern European countries, has announced the selection for its three side sections, the international juries, and the complete programme of events and discussions.

The 22 selected projects that will be participating in the WEMW co-production pitching forum, which takes place on 21 January, were announced in December (see the news), and now, the members of the international jury have been confirmed. Karlovy Vary IFF and Cinéma du Réel programmer Lorenzo Esposito, general manager of Cinéfondation Georges Goldernstern, Slovakian filmmaker Peter KerekesZDF’s Simon Ofenloch and director of ACE Jacobine van der Vloed will be the individuals tasked with deciding on the winners of the WEMW awards.

In the other WEMW side sections, starting with the fifth edition of Last Stop Trieste (LST), the documentary work-in-progress platform will showcase five creative docs. Screened at a closed session attended by 40 international film professionals (sales agents, festival programmers and TV commissioning editors), the projects will be eligible for the HBO Europe Award, the Flow Digital Cinema Award, the new cash LST Award of €2,500, sponsored by Film Centre Serbia, and the Dox Consulting Award. The LST jury is made up of Dorota Lech (Hot Docs), Aleksandar Govedarica (Syndicado) and Jenny Westergård (YLE Finnish Broadcasting).

Initiated last year, the This is IT section is taking place once again and will invite eight feature-length fiction and hybrid projects that are being produced or co-produced by Italian producers, and which are currently in the post-production phase and thus ready for their festival premieres or international distribution. The section is being organised in partnership with Milano Film Network, and the Laser Film Award will be handed out by a jury that includes Graziella Bildesheim (MAIA Workshops/EFA), Ilaria Gomarasca (Pyramide International) and Angela Prudenzi (Venice International Film Festival).

Finally, three feature-length fiction films that are currently at the editing stage have been selected for the fifth First Cut Lab workshop. Each team (director and producer) will receive bespoke advice from a consulting editor, and the workshop’s international experts will provide consultancy on the artistic, festival and, ultimately, sales potential of each film.

One of the highlights on the WEMW programme is the “In the Spotlight” panel discussion, where representatives from Benelux and Central Eastern Europe will present the funding landscapes of their respective territories. Furthermore, MIDPOINT, which is organising the first workshop of its 2019 Feature Launch (see the news) in Trieste, is hosting a lecture that will explore the differences in narration between series and films, in “Two Worlds of Storytelling”; EAVE will investigate the financial dynamics of SVoD platforms as funders in a session entitled “2019: Another Year of Major Change in Media Economics”; and Asterisk will focus on communication strategies and the role of the poster in “One Image to Rule Them All: the Art of the Film Poster”.
