LOCARNO 2003 Events

Italian Cinema Celebrates

by

The agency for the promotion of Italian cinema at home and abroad, Italia Cinema, held a celebration of the national film industry in Locarno.
The event was hosted by Giorgio Gosetti, the director of Italia Cinema, and consultant Marina Cicogna, and the guests included all of the Italian artists, producers and directors at the Swiss event.
The four Italian features that are premiering at Locarno (two of which in competition) all received a warm reception especially from the audience, whose favourite was undoubtedly Lucio Pellegrini's Ora o mai piu’ , whose closing credits were saluted with an extenuating round of applause at the Fevi Auditorium.
Giorgio Gosetti and Marina Cicogna were eager to emphasise the "extraordinary energy that Italian cinema has shown over the last few years" something that was confirmed by the excellent quality of the Italian films that screened at the Swiss event. "Italian cinema is dynamic and has the ability to attract the attention of international markets once again" and Cicogna expressed her concerns about the uncertain future of Italia Cinema.

The guests seated at the tables of the Bistro Latino included director Fiorenza Infascelli accompanied by two of the stars of her latest film, Il Vestito della Sposa, Piera degli Esposti and Andrea Di Stefano (accompanied by Valeria Golino) and the film's producer Guido Giusti of Palomar. Also present was the aforementioned Lucio Pellegrini with his producer, Domenico Procacci the founder of Fandango, and Michelangelo Frammartino, who directed the intensely moving and largely wordless story of a Calabrian village whose inhabitants pass their days waiting for time to consume them, Il Dono, selected for Present Day Filmmakers”.
Luigi Lo Cascio made a fleeting appearance. His latest film, Mio Cognato, co-starring Sergio Rubini, and directed by Alessandro Piva, was presented yesterday evening (10 August) in a crowded Piazza Grande. Lo Cascio was accompanied by Carlo Brancaleni (Rai Cinema), who produced Mio Cognato with Giovanni Veronesi.
