The 20th edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival (15-23 August) has announced the line-up for its documentary film competition. The movie with the honour of firing the starting pistol will be the Austrian title Everyday Rebellion, by brothers Arash and Arman Riahi, which forms part of a broader cross-media project focusing on non-violent protests and civil disobedience all around the world; this is something we have been covering since the film’s involvement in Power To The Pixel in 2012 (read more).

Meanwhile, Children of Transition is set to close the section, which, this year, will see a significant presence of female directors. In this project, Croatian director Matija Vukšić shows us just a handful of the effects that economic liberalism, intolerance and the growing inequalities that the region is suffering come to have on children.

In total, Europe is behind the production of 18 out of the 20 films that make up the programme, and among these, there will be six world and five international premieres. In the latter group, it is worth highlighting the gala screening of the Serbian-Croatian co-production My Craft, by Mladen Matičević, about the artist Arsen Dedić, and the participation of Uncle Tony, Three Fools and the Secret Service, a documentary that has met with great success in Bulgarian cinemas. It revolves around one of the country’s great figures in the world of animation, Donio Donev, and his relationship with the secret services: a thorny issue that has led to a campaign of institutional and professional harassment being carried out against its directors, Mina Mileva and Vesela Kazakova, in Bulgaria, which EDNEAVE and Cineuropa have publicly denounced (read more).
