Pula Film Festival starts with a new format

The Croatian national Pula Film Festival, taking place this year for the 61st time (including the period until 1990, when it used to be the Yugoslav showcase) from 12-26 July, has a new artistic board, comprising Hrvoje Pukšec, Mike Downey and Tanja Miličić. The team has introduced some changes, such as including Croatian minority co-productions in the main national competition, as opposed to previous years, when such films competed for different awards. Now films such as Velvet Terrorists [+see also:

Other novelties include the Pula Cinematheque section, a return to the famous past of the festival featuring a selection made by one renowned filmmaker. This year’s programmer is Rajko Grlić, a member of the legendary “Prague school” of Yugoslav directors who studied film at FAMU, who will present five cult Yugoslav films from 1965.

In addition, Pula will present short-length films in “Short matters!” by the European Film Academy, a new programme for young cinephiles, and a retrospective of Icelandic director Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, who will also be on the jury for the international competition, along with Croatian director Stanislav Tomić and Variety film critic Leo Barraclough.

The jury for the national competition consists of actress Nataša Dorčić, editor Ivana Fumić, director Antonio Nuić, The Hollywood Reporter's Nick Holdsworth and Bosnian producer Amra Bakšić Čamo.
