by Giovanni Veronesi will kick the eighth edition of the International Rome Film Festival (read the article on the programme). But the red carpet had already been transformed into a true landing strip for the new Disney in Digital 3D™ film, Planes by Klay Hall, which opened the parallel Alice in the City section in the morning.

The morning also marked the beginning of three exhibits dedicated to three stars of Italian cinema: Anna Magnani, Massimo Troisi, Giuseppe Tornatore, while L’amministratore [+see also:

, the new film by Vincenzo Marra, opened the CinemaXXI section later on in the day.

A large variety of stars will walk along the Rome Auditorium red carpet on November 8-17. Among the already confirmed guests are artistic director Marco Müller (more will be confirmed in upcoming days). From the United States Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lawrence, Rooney Mara, and Jared Leto together with his band “Thirty Seconds to Mars" will make appearances.

Many Europeans will also be appearing: British John Hurt, Sophie Turner, star of the television series Game of Thrones, Douglas Booth, the main actor in BBC adaptation of Great Expectations, Damian Lewis star of Homeland, Gregg Sulkin, young star for series including As the Bell Rings ell'intervallo and The Wizards of Waverly Place. Among the writers appearing at the festival will be Julian Fellowes, the man behind Downton Abbey and Academy Award-winning Gosford Park by Robert Altman; and Daniel Pennac, the famous and loved author of the Lord Malaussène books.

Numerous stars will be coming from Asia: Chinese Sean Lau, Nick Cheung and Louis Koo, stars in films directed by Hong Kong directors Benny Chan and Johnnie To, model and actress Ni Hongjie. Joining them will be famous actor and singer Japanese Toma Ikuta and Satoshi Judai. From Russia, one of the most loved stars Leonid Yarmolnik, together with Petr Fedorov, Maria Smolnikova and Yanina Studilina, all stars in successful television series.

Italian cinema will be represented, among others, by Elio Germano, Filippo Timi, Valeria Golino, Isabella Ferrari, Claudio Santamaria, Alessandro Haber, Alessandra Mastronardi, Ricky Memphis, Giampaolo Morelli, Alessandro Roja, Peppe Lanzetta.

Some directors and actors will take part in meetings with audiences, including John Hurt (9 November at 4pm in the Petrassi room); Álex de la Iglesia (10 November at 5.30pm in the Studio Theatre); Spike Jonze (11 November at 6pm in the Petrassi room); Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola (13 November at 5.30 in the Petrassi Room); Checco Zalone (14 November at 5pm in the Petrassi Room); the king of Asian action movies Tsui Hark will hold a master class, directed by French Olivier Assayas, after the giving out of the Maverick Director Award and the premiere of his latest film Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon 3D (Saturday 16 November, at 9pm in the Sinopoli Room).
