The Blacks vies for Foreign Language Academy Award

has been selected by the Film Artists' Association of Croatia as the country’s foreign language Academy Award submission, it was announced yesterday in Zagreb.

The low-key war drama won Best Film awards at festivals in Ljubljana, Belgrade and Linz, as well as Best Director and the FIPRESCI Prize in Cottbus. At the 2009 Pula Film Festival, it received Best Director for Juric and Devic, Best Supporting Actor for Niksa Butijer and Best Sound Design for Dubravka Premar.

The Blacks is also the recipient of the newly established Bauer Award in Motovun for the best film in theatrical distribution in the territories of the former Yugoslavia. It has been lauded by many critics as the best Croatian film since the country’s independence.
