Tirard may shoot Asterix without Depardieu
"I will make Astérix chez les Bretons, I’m currently in the writing phase and only at the end of the screenplay will I decide the film’s cast,” says Laurent Tirard. The director – currently in Rome to present his third film, Little Nicholas [+see also:
film profile] (being released in Italy on Easter through BIM after having exceeded 5.5 million admissions in France, see news) – told Cineuropa he has been handed to the reins of the next Asterix instalment.
When asked “What about Gerard Depardieu/Obelix?", Tirard answered: “Anne, the daughter of René Goscinny [creator of Asterix with Albert Uderzo and of Petit Nicolas with Jean-Jacques Sempé], visited me on the set of Nicholas and told me she was very unhappy with the previous film, Asterix at the Olypmic Games [+see also:
film profile]. She asked me to shoot the new film. Naturally, I was very flattered and accepted.
“The French media have thrown out a lot of names in regards the cast [besides Depardieu, Kad Merad, Dany Boon, François-Xavier Demaison and Jean Reno] but no one has ever consulted with me. Depardieu? I’ve never met him. I’ll decide after writing the script, but I want to change the film’s register and hence the main characters”.
