December Heat warms up for the race
by Annika Pham
Asko Kase’s historical film December Heat has been selected as Estonia’s entry for this year’s Academy Awards nominations in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
Based on true events, December Heat looks at the failed 1924 communist coup in Tallinn through the eyes of a young couple. The film was produced by Artur Talvik (Ruut Films), with most of the budget coming from the Estonian government, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia in 2008.
Released last autumn, it became a huge hit at the local box office (over 50,000 tickets sold), breaking admission records of the last two decades. December Heat is sold internationally by NonStop Sales.
The Academy Awards nominations will be announced on February 2, 2010 and the 82nd awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on March 7.
