The story takes place at the end of the civil war in Croatia, and follows Boro (Nebojsa Glogovac), who after seven years returns to his village in Herzegovina with his wife and son, to visit his family.

Boro doesn’t speak to his father Pasko (Tonko Lonza), believing him responsible for his mother’s suicide. Boro’s brother Pero (Emir Hadzihafizbegovic), who lived in Sarajevo and was crippled by a grenade, now lives with their father. Jasna (Natasa Janjic), Boro’s wife, is permanently dissatisfied with her marriage and the two fight constantly, even in front of their five-year-old son. A well-natured donkey, much less hardheaded than the people, will appear to be the catalyst of a happy ending.

Exquisitely shot by four-time Pula Best Cinematography winner Marko Pivcevic and featuring fantastic performances from the whole cast, the film scored the second best mark from audiences at the Sarajevo Film Festival. This may well take it to 15-20,000 admissions in Croatia, which would be considered a great success.

Donkey has also been invited to the Bright Future section of Rotterdam and to the Goteborg Film Festival.
