02/02/2008 - Production company Fandango pays close attention to detail, having filled even the film’s smallest roles with top name actors

film profile] can be seen even in the smallest roles, which went to top name actors. Domenico Procacci’s production company Fandango led the project, in collaboration with RAI Cinema, Portobello Pictures (a company created by Procacci and Eric Abrahamson in the UK) and Phoenix Film Investment.

"The film had a medium-to-high budget,” said Procacci. "It cost just over €5m and took nine weeks to shoot. The involvement of name French actors such as Charles Berling, Hippolyte Girardot and Denis Podalydès was possible because we were working with a beautiful novel and a solid screenplay. And, obviously, having Nanni Moretti in a film helps involve other international actors, that way they trust the project".

With a brief camera by Roman Polanski, the film also features two directors facing off in front of the camera. "From the beginning we thought of having a strong personality for that role and in particular an internationally renowned director. We had a list of names that included Polanski, thanks also to Valentina Conti, who helped me convince the director to appear in the film.

“The game was obvious. The character is in awe before such a powerful man, just as on set Nanni had to feel in awe before such an eminent colleague. We enjoyed seeing what would happen in that kind of a situation. Polanski was on set for one day and at a certain point there were three directors simultaneously making suggestions for the shot.”
