FREEDOM STREET - A MAFIA MURDER

by Aurelio Grimaldi

synopsis

January 6, 1980. Sicily’s president, Piersanti Mattarella, is going to mass with his family. A man moves close to the car window and shoots, killing him. The movie recreates the tense political atmosphere at the time before the homicide: Piersanti, protected in Rome by the secretary of the Democrazia Cristiana party and by the President of Italian Republic Sandro Pertini, is constantly surrounded by his sicilian opponents, some of them belonging to his own party. But Mattarella’s murder is also the story of a family, of people, values and ideas pursued with an authentic spirit of service and solidarity.
