GANGOR

by Italo Spinelli

synopsis

While reporting on tribal women in Purulia, Upin, a well-known Indian photo reporter, is transfixed by the breast of a woman named Gangor, glimpsed as she nurses her baby outdoors, and immortalizes her in a shot that lands on all the front pages. A scandal ensues and Gangor is ostracized, helpless against the men in the village, who rape her. Upin is wracked with guilt and sacrifices everything he has to help Gangor, but in the end it is she who finds the courage to report the rapists to the police. At the trial, the women mobilize around her. From a short story written by the great Indian woman writer Mahasweta Devi.
